Guidance for Unexpected Moments
Even the brightest smiles can meet a rough patch now and then.
If something happens after hours, here are a few ways to stay calm and protect your child’s smile until you can reach us.
If a Permanent Tooth Is Knocked Out
Stay calm and find the tooth as quickly as possible.
Hold it by the crown (the top part), not the root. If you can, gently place it back into the socket and have your child hold it in place by biting down softly on a piece of gauze.
If that isn’t possible, place the tooth in a glass of milk and contact us immediately. Time is key, and we’ll walk you through what to do.
If a Tooth Is Chipped or Broken
Rinse your child’s mouth gently with warm water.
Use a cold compress on the cheek or lip to reduce swelling.
If you find any broken pieces, place them in a damp cloth or gauze and bring them with you. We’ll restore the tooth and your child’s comfort as quickly as we can.
If the Lip, Tongue, or Cheek Is Injured
Clean the area gently with warm water and apply a cold compress to ease swelling. If the bleeding continues or the injury seems deep, please visit us or your nearest emergency room right away.
